Men’s 1st Team – Promotion to Division 1

The season gone by will be rightly remembered as the year Weston won Division 2 for the first time in its 63 years existence. This was a fitting end to what I believe was a sea change in players beliefs, attitudes and behaviours. Early on in the season, we were tested mentally with 2 quick defeats but we quickly addressed the issues and applied the necessary measures, to prevent this happening again in the league. We went on to win 10 league games and draw 3 which handed us the league title and automatic promotion. I am sure there were times when our defensive organisation was called into question but the record speaks for itself: the best defensive record in Division 2 ever. This achievement highlights the point that it’s more important to play effective hockey rather than spectator hockey. Outside of the league, we should have won the semi-final of the Neville Davin cup in normal time and were genuinely unlucky to lose the quarter final of the Irish hockey challenge cup. However, these deficits remain in the shadow of our success.

Men's 2nd Team

The Weston Men’s 2nd X1 find themselves in a much healthier position than they were this time 12 months ago, after a very successful campaign in 2009/10.  The 2nd X1 found themselves competing with Naas, Skerries, Portrane, North Kildare and St James’ Gate 1st teams in a very competitive league.  To their credit, Philip Corcoran’s side were well in the promotional mix right up to the last few weeks, but a 22 game season finally caught up with them in March and they ran out of steam somewhat at the final hurdle.    They finished 3rd in Div 5 behind Naas and eventual winners Portrane.
In the cups, the 2nd X1 welcomed Mossley to Griffeen Valley in the Irish Junior Cup back in November and had a cracking cup tie before finally succumbing to the northern outfit.  There best chance of cup success came in the Intermediate cup.  A bye in round 1 meant a 2nd round tie with old rivals Suttonians 2nds.  A comprehensive 4-0 win led to a quarter final clash with Fingal 3rds at ALSSA.  Fingal were too strong on the day and went on to win the cup outright in April.  Highlights of the season included away league wins in Naas, Skerries and North Kildare as well as an excellent home win against Div 5 winners Portrane.

Mens 3rd Team- Winners of Junior Cup

Mens 3rds have had a successful season. A mixed start in League Division 7 saw us placed mid table at Christmas. A big improvement in commitment to training from January contributed to better league results pushing us up to 3rd. Once we knew we couldn’t catch Athy and promotion was out of our reach the focus switched to the Junior Cup.
The Junior Cup run ended in a comprehensive win over Mullingar bringing this cup to the club for first time in 30 years.
