Weston 2-2 Dalkey

With the frost only just melted on the astro-turf, Weston ladies fourth team took to the pitch against an experienced Dalkey team in their home match on Saturday.  Weston mid-field dominated the game from the whistle as the opposition struggled to make an impression early on in the match.  Great teamwork was displayed by the home team as they distributed the ball beautifully, allowing the forwards to create several chances at goal.  The ladies were rewarded for their valiant efforts with a wonderful goal from Katie Tuomey that started with a pass from Aoife Ryan in defence to Orla Lowry-Hayes in centre-midfield.  The ball was carried forward to Jessica Molloy and ultimately passed on to the goal scorer.  A superb performance from Aoife Ryan at right-back allowed the defence to stay strong in the face of any attack from the opposition.

In the second half, Dalkey asserted themselves upon the game with more authority and Weston defence had to work harder to keep the opposition at bay.  However, Weston showed tenacity and scored their second goal very shortly into the second half.  Once again, the goal began from deep inside the mid-field with the ladies using the width of the pitch to craftily outwit the opposition.  Katie Tuomey did not disappoint as she made contact with the ball to give Weston a two nil lead.  Weston conceded their first goal from a free taken outside the circle. 2-1 – game on!  Both teams fought hard to gain the upper hand on the match with goal chances produced by both teams.  Karen Akindolie had a great game in mid-field and fought hard to fend off fierce determination from Dalkey to even the score.  The next goal came from a square ball across the Weston goal and a deflection off a Weston foot in the circle.  However, justice was served to the opposition as their forwards were perfectly poised to receive the ball had it not made contact with the Weston player.  The final score was 2-2 and the ladies were perhaps a little unlucky not to add three points to the table on this occasion.  Credit is due to Weston as this was a true team effort and under the watchful eyes of Jon Long and Peter Kirwan this team shows great promise
