After beating Phoenix Park in the first round of the Leinster Cup Weston played Dalkey in the second round of the cup today. Weston ladies had anticipated a tough game against Dalkey considering they were league winners of division 8 last season.

The game started well with Weston keeping possession of the ball in their end of the pitch. Because the girls put great pressure on through their press Dalkey were finding it very difficult to make a break. Weston won three short corners in the first half but unfortunately found it hard to put the ball away. Weston mid fields and defence had to work a little harder as the game progressed giving Dalkey a couple of shots on goal. Thanks to amazing saves by our superb goalie, Sophie Byrne Dalkey did not get the opportunity to concede a goal. After feeling the pressure from Dalkey it was nil all at half time.

Weston listened to their frustrated coach Neil during half time and came back fighting in the second half winning another two short corners. On the second corner Emer Fitzgerald received a short pass from Nicola and hit it towards the back post where Emma Gunn was perfectly positioned to knock it into the back of the goal. This goal put Weston in the lead. The game remained one nil but it was not an easy battle. Dalkey fought hard to equalize but thankfully to our strong defence and very hard work from a very energetic and determined Mary Ann Ryan we managed to keep them at bay. The game finished one nil to Weston giving Weston their place in the quarter finals of the Leinster Cup that will be played on the 16th of January 2010.

Weston 1 v Pembroke 1

Weston 2nds went braved the cold weather very early last Saturday morning. They were taking on Pembroke who were below them on the league table to date. Weston had been on a winning streak but unfortunately they did not gain the three points they deserved from this game. Weston had 90 percent possession in the first half which left very little work for their defense. Sarah, Elenor, Fran and Emer made sure the ball stayed up our end with Nicola and Emma working hard to keep possession around the D. Weston had a number of opportunities but unfortunately they made hard work for themselves and did not have the control of the ball that they were looking for when it came to scoring. Fortunately with only two minutes to go in the first half Weston took the lead. A ball was shot at goal when the Pembroke goalie dived to the ground in an attempt to save the goal. After a bit of fumbling the ball was recovered and Emma Gunn put it away just seconds before the half time whistle blew.

Weston’s performance in the second half was very different than the first half of the game giving Pembroke an advantage from the start of the second half. Unfortunately Pembroke gained possession of the ball passed it form mid field to the forwards and they took a shot on goal that was difficult for any goalie to save. This equalizer was unfortunate for Weston as Pembroke had only taken two shots on goal. Weston fought to re-gain control over the game but it did not happen for them on this occasion. The game ended in a one all draw giving Weston one point more than they had but unfortunately not the three points they were hoping for.

Weston 2nds v Phoenix Park Leinster Cup 2nd round

Weston ladies 2nds came out in full force determined to make it worth their while last Wednesday night! Having drawn with Phoenix Park earlier in the season Weston was expecting a fight on their hands.

Despite the adverse weather conditions of wind and rain Weston started off strong holding Phoenix Park at arms length. While Weston had 80 percent possession they fought hard to win their first short corner. This was taken perfectly and put away by a clear shot on goal from Nicola Harris. Sophie Byrne played brilliantly in goal saving a few shots until Weston sat back for a few minutes allowing Phoenix Park came in hard and equalize with just less than five minutes to half time.

After a stern talking to at half time Weston came back into the second half in full force. With the girls having a few near misses they were once again in the lead when we won another short corner. The ball was passed across to Elenor Griffith who put it away beautifully.  Weston held their own with a very strong mid field (Sarah Mortell and Elenor Griffith) and some great runs from Francis Carroll finishing with a well deserved 2-1 win! Weston will play Dalkey in the 3rd round of the Leinster Cup on the 5th of December 2009.

Weston 1 -  Our Lady's Terenure 1

Weston ladies seconds travelled to Terenure to play Our Lady's. From the starting whistle it was obvious this was going to be a tough game. In the first half of this game weston defence where under a lot of pressure. Anne Kelly, Stephaine Maher and Catherine worked very hard to keep off Our Ladys. The score was nil all at half time. After some encouraging words from coach Neil O Donnell at half time, weston ladies took to the pitch with great determination. Soon into the second half Our Lady Terenure, scored the first goal of the match. It was now 1-0 to Our Ladys. After this goal weston fought back hard which lead to a good few runs, and great passing bt mid field. With a great run from Francis Carroll and a brilliant pass to Neasa Henery, lead to a fantastic goal from Neasa. This now brought the game to 1-1. Weston worked hard for the rest of the game, and put a lot of pressure on Our Ladys Terenure. There was a great team effort put in by all the girls.

31st October 2009 ~~Weston 4 v Corinthian 2

What a difference three weeks make! Weston Ladies second team travelled to Corinthian’s Hockey Club (CHC) on Saturday and secured three points on the league table with a convincing 4 -2 win over the home team.
The match began with each team trying to assert their dominance early on with a hotly contested first ten minutes. However, a goal from Emma Gunn ensured that it was Weston that gained the upper hand. The goal was a result of very impressive team work beginning from deep inside the mid-field with a great run from Sarah Mortel. Sarah passed the ball to Francis Carroll in right mid-field who pressed forward and passed it to Orla Lowry-Hayes in the circle. The ball was ultimately passed to Emma who was perfectly positioned at the goal mouth to deflect the ball between the posts. Approximately five minutes later, a short corner resulted in a second goal for Weston. A beautifully-struck ball by Eleanor Griffith hit the boards giving Weston a 2 – 0 lead. Corinthian ladies seemed shaken; however, to their credit they kept their heads up and fought bravely to the end of the second half. Weston defence (Anne Kelly, Stephanie Maher, Eleanor Griffith and Mairead Ryan) gave a great performance preventing the opposition from penetrating at any stage during the first half.
The home team began the second half with obvious intent and converted this to a goal in the first five minutes. Weston’s fitness was crucial to keeping the opposition at bay and staving off any threat that the opposition posed. Their third goal came from a short corner, once again off the stick of the in-form Emma Gunn. CHC responded to the pressure and scored their second goal shortly after to give a 3 -2 scoreline – game on!
However, as the match progressed there was an air of inevitability about the game as Weston grew in confidence. Their tenacity paid off with the final goal of the game scored by Francis Carroll. Fran’s trademark run up the right-hand side paid dividends as she beat the opposition defence, placing the ball beautifully into the back of the net. The spirit of the home team was finally defeated and Weston held strong to the end of the game.  Overall this was a fine team effort. Weston maintained their shape for the duration of the game playing with a determination that was obvious to any spectator.  Well done ladies.
