Ladies 1st (Division 4) Match Reports 2009/2010
Weston V Naas – Saturday 10th October 2009
After an unlucky start last week losing to Three Rock Rovers 1 nil, Weston put their first 3 points on the board and showed they were indeed a force to be reckoned with this season. They were playing away to Naas and were delighted to take the points off them.
From the start, Weston were strong and committed and were unlucky to concede a Naas goal from a penalty corner awarded to them. Weston did not drop their heads at all and got straight back in the game and continued their wave of attack forward. Ten minutes after the Naas goal Sinead O’Connor dribbled the ball with great precision and composure beating three Naas defenders and laying the ball off perfectly to Rachel Murphy on the far right post who took control, beat the keeper and pushed the ball meticulously into the corner of the goal. Rachel, new to the Firsts this year is the youngest member on the team and is just going from strength to strength as the weeks progress.
A minute to go before half time Naas burst through the Weston defence and scored their second goal to make it 2 – 1 going into half time. Weston had a few minutes to gather their thoughts and came back out fighting and determined not to lose this game. Aimee Franklyn, the Weston goalie kept Weston in the game making some very demanding saves and well done to her! They worked very hard as a team and won many a short corner which led to their second goal. Aoife Murray hit the ball out to the top of the circle and it was pushed hard back to her. She picked it up on the back post and belted it into the corner leaving the Naas Keeper no chance whatsoever.
With about 7 minutes to go the pace of the game was fast and furious with each side determined not to let the other get the better of them. Weston, however, won out that battle and were awarded another corner. The ball was sent to Grainne Ni Lanagain, who’s shot was not on and passed it to Mairead D’Arcy at the top who then passed it to Catherine Walsh in space who had an unbelievable strike on goal to give Weston a 3 – 2 lead. Naas continued their attack but the very strong Weston defence would not let them through. The final whistle sounded and a delighted Weston side earned their first three points out of six. Next week they are home to Trinity at 10am who also won this weekend 3 – 2. That should be an interesting game!
