Weston on the up!

The ever-expanding frontiers will be taken a step further this weekend when Weston travel to North Kildare to play their Division 2 match against Dublin University.

"King's Hospital is not available this Saturday, so we will play outside the County" says Jim Collins, match secretary of the club which actually has its roots in Co. Kildare.

Originally from Leixlip, the club has lived a nomadic existence since it lost its pitches some 30 years ago. The loss was doubly significant as it marked the demise of the Womans side.

But things are certainly on the up and up for the West County outfit in an area which really has no great hockey-playing tradition.

The recent promotion to Division 2 is another bonus. "We are probably better prepared for it than the last time we played in that Division, but it is still tough" says Collins.

King's Hospital's new astro surface provides the training facility and that will also be the arena when the Weston entertain Collegians in the Irish Senior Cup next month.

Things can only get better....The Sutton experience is a contrast to that of fellow minnows Weston who gave Collegians from Belfast a good rattle before going down 2-1 in the cup.

Weston's mettle will be tested to the full also tomorrow, however, when they tackle Leinster champions Pembroke at Serpentine Avenue.

The Lucan club has taken good advice this term since promotion back up to senior grade, calling in coach John McInerney to marshall the troops.

Shane O'Hare (Colm's Brother) found the mark against Collegians but this was a rare Weston strike.

Against Pembroke he will surely have few opportunities to repeat the dose, while central defenders Freddie Attride and Mark Birnie are bound to be busy - very busy.

The initial round of the Leinster Senior Cup on Saturday duly brought a rush of goals for Pembroke (8) and Corinthians (5) against Weston and Suttonians. Francis de Rossa notched a hat-trick for Pembroke and Trevor Dunne achieved his first break-through for the premier side.

26/4 - 28/4 Trip to Bandon

-------------------------------------

A total of 19 people travelled to Bandon (players and supporters) and stayed in the Munster Arms Hotel. On the Friday night Bandon HC celebrated their 21st Anniversary in the Hotel to which Weston were invited. The next day Weston played two matches - one Mixed and one Mens. Weston Players were noticeably more tired than their opposition but still managed to give a good account of themselves. After another night of music and craic the team travelled back to Dublin on the Sunday.

MATCH SECRETARIES REPORT

1995 / 1996

Ladies 1st Team - Middle 'B'. Captain : Linda Jarvis.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

The team had a very successful season in the league. They lost only one match with the remaining 15 matches ending in 9 wins and 6 draws. Their points at the end of the season totalled 36 and they finished 3rd in their division. Unfortunately in the cup they were knocked out in the 1st round. Well done to everyone who played on the team.

Ladies 2nd Team - Minor 'A'. Captain : Daphne Boland.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

The 2nd team had a mixed season in the league. Of the 16 matches played they won 7 drew 3 and lost 6 and finished with 24 points which was still good enough to see them finish in 5th place in the minor division. Their season got off to a false start as the Minor divisions had to be restructured due to a number of teams pulling out at the beginning. In the Cup the team were knocked out of the Minor Cup in the second round after extra time.

Mens 1st Team - Division 2. Captain : Shane O'Hare.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

This season the team returned to division 2. A number of pre-season training sessions were held and a coach from Aer Lingus was engaged to work on the finer points of the game. Despite this the team struggled throughout the season and suffered some heavy defeats along the way. In the senior cup we were defeated by Pembroke Wanderers in Ballsbridge. At the end of the season the league record was -

P18 W2 D3 L13 F8 A58 Pts07. The team, along with SuttoniansHC has been relegated to division 3.

Mens 2nd Team - Division 8. Captain : Tom Kinsella.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

At the beginning of the season the team started off very well and at one stage were in the top three. During the middle part of the season we lost most of our matches and suddenly we were at the bottom of the table. The final part of the season saw us pick up 9 out of 12 points which pushed us back up to the middle of the table. There is one match left which is away to Marillac on 20th April in St. Raphaels College at 3pm. There are no up-to-date tables available but we should finish somewhere around 5th place. The team were knocked out of the junior cup by Clontarf in the 2nd round. League Record - P17 W7 D4 L6 F29 A26 Pts18.

Mens 3rd Team - Division 12. Captain : Padraic Larkin

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Of all the mens teams this season the 3rd team were the most consistent. Thoughout the season they maintained their position in the top half of division 12. At one stage it looked as if they were in line for promotion to division 11. Because there are no up-to-date tables available it is not possible to say at this stage where exactly they will end up. They were knocked out of the minor cup by Mullingar after a replay. League Record - P14 W6 D5 L3 F8 A10 Pts17.
