Weston Hockey Club was founded in the late 1940's but it
was not until 1954 that they entered competitive Hockey being content until then
to play friendly games. Among the
Founder Members of the Club were L. Eiffe, M. Lynam, P. Lynam, P. Molloy, T. Molloy, Mrs. Gerald
Burke and Miss Anne Pender.
At the point when the Club entered competitive Hockey
they had only 14 playing Members, but so successful has been the promotion of
the Club's affairs that, to-day, the Club has three Mens
and three Ladies teams.
The industry and enthusiasm of the Members of the Club is also
reflected in the wonderful improvements which drew the acclaim of the Leinster Branch Grounds Inspection Committee.
Weston won the Minor Cup after a replay in their first
season beating the
The Baldonnel Club showed that
their win of the previous season was no fluke by beating TRR 4 1-0 aet and winning the Minor Cup again in 1955/1956. However, as in the previous season, Weston
went down to Willwood in the Junior League Final losing
by 2-0.
Weston kept up the good work in the 1956/1957 season
beating Newtimes in the Final of the Intermediate Cup
and, also, into the bargain accounting for neighbours Air Corps in the
Intermediate League Final.
The 1957/1958 season saw the breakthrough at last in the
Intermediate League when Weston beat Air Corps in the Final but only after a
replay by 2-0 thus scoring their first win in this competition. The same season saw the Baldonnel
men take the Intermediate Cup (they beat
The Clubs great run of success came to an end until 1965
when the Intermediate League Trophy again came their way, for they beat
Pembroke W 4 in the Final by 1-0.
In 1960, however, they were beaten in the Leinster Final of the Irish Junior Cup by Pembroke
Wanderers 2 who went on to win the trophy.
Last season Weston reached the Galtrim Cup
Final but found Railway Union too strong for them and went down by 3-0.
The Ladies of the Club have not been without their share
of successes too, for they won Minor Badges in 1957 and the Minor League in
1956. They also played in the Final of
Badges in 1966.
Few Clubs can boast so much success in such a short space
of time and obviously the lull in winning is only of a temporary phase. We confidently expect to see Weston back at
the top again before long.

In the Junior Badge Final, Weston for the second year in
succession were on the losing side beaten by a really
good Ling 3.
Their success was due in large measure to Ling's enthusiastic Captain Miss Ann Martin. Star player was Centre-Half Miss E. Coyne
and Mildred Kelly on the right-wing was the most impressive forward.
Weston did really well to reach the Final, and with only
one defeat in the League, they have shown real consistency.
They have a fine goalkeeper in Miss Cunningham and
left-back Miss E. Stassen is of particular high
standard for this grade. They have a
good centre-half in Ms. N. Birnie. Although Miss S. Ryan
failed to score against Ling, she is the one who has been getting the goals all
season, and it would be no surprise if Weston won the League to compensate for
last Saturdays disappointment.
