WESTON HAVE BIG HOCKEY DATE
Making a big name in the Hockey Circles is the Weston
Hockey and Lawn Tennis Club, Leixlip. The Club formed in 1947 is currently
fielding two Mens and two Womens
teams in the Leinster Middle and Intermediate
Leagues.
Winners of the Minor Cup in 1955/56 and the Intermediate
Cup in 1957/58 and a number of League contests as well, the Club has come a long way since its formation.
Although the Season is drawing to a close, the Club has a
big date on its calendar. It is staging
its Annual Tournament at its ground in Leixlip at
which 20 teams will compete for the Abie Jacob
Memorial Cup six-a-side Hockey.
Getting 20 teams together on the same date is no easy
matter and the Officers and Committee will have their hands full.
The Club has more than 50 Members. One thing in which the Leixlip
Boys and Girls take a certain amount of pride is that despite enormous
difficulties they have never been afraid to travel far afield
for matches playing as far away as
The Club has its own grounds but could do with another
pitch. They take their Hockey seriously
as is indicated by the fact that they have worked their way up to the Middle
League from the Junior and Intermediate Leagues.
Although Hockey is the Club's strongpoint they have been
moderately successful in Lawn Tennis as well.
Possibly one of the prime reasons the Club has held together is the fact
the Members have been able to turn to another sport when the Hockey Season has
closed each year.
The Club plays in Class Four in the Dublin District Lawn
Tennis League and will be putting forward two teams this year, one Mens and one Ladies.
