Last Saturdays results in the Middle League 'A' have left
that competition in a very interesting state.
The four top teams clashed in two ties and in each case
the result was a draw. Lorraine now
lead with 8 points from six matches with Pembroke Wanderers 2, YMCA 2 and
Weston 1 all having 7 points from four, five and six matches respectively. With matters in such a state, it was all the
more unsatisfactory that the last two named, YMCA 2 and Weston 1 should have
run into that consistant plague
"Umpire Trouble".
Though the start of their game at Weston was delayed for
almost half and hour, despite the fact there was another game scheduled to
follow it, there was still no official Umpire present when it finally got under
way. One did arrive shortly before the
interval, but that was all, and the Home Club was forced to supply two of its
own members to officiate. Under the
circumstances counted themselves fortunate to have shared the precious points.
They led 1-0 and 2-1 with YMCA equalising first through
Roy who scored with a beautiful reverse stick drive and then through Ronnie
Walsh. Just before Weston had got their
second goal, Farrar, worked his way past the whole defence including the
goalkeeper and when he was taken down with only an empty net facing him a
penalty bully seemed clearly indicated instead a short corner was awarded.
Another team to suffer its first reverse in the
Intermediate 'A' was Newtimes 2 beaten 2-0 by Weston
2 and Pembroke Wanderers 3 (Smithson, Moody) defeating YMCA 2-1. An interesting tussle has developed also in
this section. Newtimes
and Pembroke Wanderers after seven matches and Weston after eight have now each
gathered 11 points.

2 and Pembroke Wanderers 3 who have 13 and 12 points respectively from their 8
matches. Weston 2 have

A good number of cup matches were decided on Saturday,
those in the Irish Junior Cup all being decided by narrow margins with the
exception of that between Weston 1 and Avoca 2, the former advancing to the 3rd
Round with a 6-2 victory. The winners
inside-forwards Birnie, Duke and O'Hare were chiefly
responsible for the big total and were well supported in the second half by a
great display on the part of left-half
R. Cunningham. O'Hare (3),
Duke, Madigan and Cunningham were the Weston marksmen.
