Both Weston teams recorded grand victories.   The first team defeated Pembroke Wanderers 3, both goals being netted by W. Birnie who with B. O'Hare and             B. Burke were outstanding.

The second team now share leadership with Railway Union 4 in Section 'A' of the Junior League as a result of their win over TRR 4 at Londonbridge Road.

Weston 2 came from behind to defeat Rovers in what was a most exciting game throughout.  L. Eiffe had two brilliant goals for the winners and was well supported by D. Morton and B. Hughes.

Railway Union 4 lost their unbeaten record however and now drop two points behind their conquerors, Weston 2, in Junior 'A'.

In a game which failed to live up to expectations, Railway Union 4 went under 2-0 to Weston 2.   Weston on the attack for most of the game failed to take advantage of a great service laid on by wing T. O'Byrne and P. Brosnan.   L. Duke and S. Corry scored the Weston goals and they now lead the Section.

Weston '1st' and '2nd' retained their unbeaten records at Weston, YMCA 3 scored first and for a while  looked as if they might pull off a surprise win.   Goals from     J. Black (2) and W. Birnie, however, soon put Weston on top and although YMCA scored again from a short corner their finishing was generally weak and K. Duke got a fourth goal for Weston almost on time.

L. Duke and L. Eiffe were the scorers in Weston 2's win over Monkstown 4 by 2-1.

Atkinson gradually got the upper hand and equalised shortly after half-time.   A leading role in the fight back was played by W. Lee who got three goals, the other coming from B. Huet.

Inter Cup               Weston 1 (4)            Air Corps 2 (2)

Air Corps, undefeated this season for so long, suffered their second successive defeat when ousted from the Intermediate Cup by Weston, the latter club thus retaining their unbeaten Home record which has lasted since they entered competitive Hockey four years ago.   An early goal by Lynam was just the tonic the Weston team needed and half-backs Smith, E. Duke and Cunningham giving excellent support they got a second from W. Birnie and a third from a glorious reverse Strike shot  by right winger K. Duke before the interval.   In the second-half Air Corps piled on the pressure.      M. Dunne and M. O'Regan hit top form in the half-back line and McCarthy and Ryan narrowed the gap to a single goal.   However Black then moved into the centre from outside right, picked up a loose ball, and having slipped two defenders calmly beat the goalkeeper and thus booked Weston's passage to the next round.

The Intermediate Cup is the first trophy to be brought to the final stage and Lorraine 2 and Weston 1 will contest the decider on March 17th at headquarters.

Weston qualified for the decider for the second year in succession, their fine teamwork being too much for Drogheda.   The winners marksmen were B. O'Hare and E. Duke from long corners and J. Black and K. Duke as a result of individual efforts from the right-wing and left-wing respectively.

Air Corps 1 seem to have Division 'A' of the Intermediate League wrapped up and their second string are the only ones likely to trouble Weston in Division 'B'.   There is a close struggle in Junior 'A' between Weston 2, Railway 4 and Pembroke Wanderers 4.

Weston 1 were seriously handicapped in the Intermediate Hockey Cup Final against Lorraine 2 this morning when their centre-forward M. Lynam retired with a knee injury after ten minutes play.   Weston never lost heart and their efforts were rewarded when B. O'Hare gave them a deserved win with a great goal in the last few minutes of extra time.   Defenses were on top throughout but Lorraine lost a few scoring chances early on.

In the Junior League, Weston 2 defeated Dublin University 4 (2-1) to finish a point ahead of Trinity and qualify for the final against Aer Lingus.

 Evening Herald 23/4/58 (Wed)

-------------------------------------------

Last Saturday should have seen the close of the Junior Hockey season, but did not, for of the three League Finals only one produced a definite result, Weston 2 defeating Aer Lingus in the Junior decider by 1-0.   Even this match almost went to extra time for as the final whistle blew a drive by Kelly of Aer Lingus drilled into the net mere seconds too late.   So the goal scored by Louis Eiffe in the second-half gave the honours to Weston.

Weston 1 also made sure of their place in the sun by defeating YMCA (5-1) and went on to meet Air Corps in the Intermediate Final in which, however, they had to be satisfied with sharing two goals, the scorers being Grant for Air Corps and O'Hare for Weston.

Evening Herald 26/4/58 (Sat)

---------------------------------------

Inter 'B'               Weston 1 (1)            Air Corps 1 (0)

Weston had only one goal to spare in taking Intermediate honours at the expense of Air Corps but though this came immediately after the start through Frank Duke, they seldom looked in danger of being pulled back to level terms subsequently.

The Weston Hockey Club, which won the Intermediate Cup on St. Patricks Day at Londonbridge Road, have a great record.   Since their humble beginnings some seasons ago, they have never yet failed  to be involved in the closing stages of some competition.   In their first two seasons they won the Minor Cup; they reached the Junior League Final three times, winning it once, and now they have retained their Intermediate title.   Incidentally, the special branch sub-committee, in its recent report, recommended  that Weston should be promoted to the Middle League.

The Ladies had two teams entered, the 1st's in Middle 'A' and the 2nd's in Minor.

The Ladies Match Secretary was Miss M. Cullen.

The Teams in Middle 'A' were :-

Weston 1, Bray Marian 2, Malahide 2, Mercers, Muckross 5, Pembroke W 5,

UCD 3, Loretto 5, Maids 3 and Old Alex 3.

The Teams in Minor League were :-
