I was glad to receive news from the newly formed Aer Lingus Club who are enjoying a good run.   Interest in the club is high and they hope to be able to field two teams next season.   They had another victory last Saturday, when they visited Weston and overcame the home second eleven by three goals to one.

Weston had a hard fought and rather lucky win over Willwood, 3-1.

Centre-forward M. Lynam gave them a half time lead and after the losers had equalised through Nolan who beat right full back P. Molloy in a penalty bully, B. Burke from a short corner and K. Felton from a pass by left winger Duke made the issue safe for Weston.

Weston 1 and Corinthians 2 drew 1-1 on a pitch at Weston that was anything but suitable for Cup Hockey.  The home side were the first to score but Corinthians after equalising through Bob Wilkie had practically all the play in the second half without being able to notch the winner.   The Umpires who did a fine job throughout, did not consider the playing of extra time feasible.

Probably the best performance over what might be termed the holiday period, however, came from Weston the previous week who defeated Corinthians 2 by three goals to one in the second round of the Irish Junior Cup, certainly a very fine display by the Intermediate League Club.

The third round of the Irish Junior Cup was due to be played next Saturday but that will not be possible as at the moment only Weston, Grangegorman, and YMCA 2 have qualified for that stage of the tourney.

In the second round of the Intermediate Cup, Weston 1 have been drawn against Lorraine 2 while in the Minor Cup Weston 2 have been drawn against Dublin University 4.

In the Irish Junior Cup Weston kept the flag of the Intermediate Clubs flying by holding Cremore to a one all draw.   The ground was not in good condition but on the days play Weston were probably the better side scoring first.   Cremore got the equaliser with a somewhat unusual goal when Lalor took a free from outside the circle, pushed it through, and with none of his colleagues following it in went after it himself got possession when a defender stopped it and shot it to the net.

Easily the most outstanding performance of the weekend was turned in by Weston who defeated their classed opponents Cremore by 2-0 in the third round of the Irish Junior Cup.   The losers were somewhat handicapped by having two of their players on Interprovincial duty, but they can have no real grumbles for Weston were much the better side and fully earned their notable victory.

Inter Cup               Weston 1 (3)            Lorraine 2 (0)

The Intermediate League heroes in the Irish Junior Cup, Weston, made further progress in the Intermediate Cup by beating Lorraine 2, 3-0.    Both sides are undefeated in their respective League Divisions and they certainly served up an exciting encounter for the final score does not give a true reflection of the closeness of the game.

Weston attacked from the bully off but fine efforts by Cunningham, Birnie and Lynam were foiled by the opposing defence in which the goalkeeper and Connerton at Centre Back were particulary outstanding.   Nearing half-time Lorraine forced the pace but were in turn foiled by the defensive work of Walsh in goal, right full back P. Molloy and P. Moore.

In the second half however the tide turned in favour of Weston, left full back B. Burke converted two penalty corners to put them firmly on the road to success, which was made doubly sure when inside right J. Black beat two men in the circle before pushing the ball passed a hapless goalkeeper.

The last four in the Leinster Section of the Irish Junior Cup are known as a result of last Saturday's games which saw  Grangegorman and Railway Union 2 defeat    TRR 2 and Avoca 2 respectively to join Lorraine and Weston in the semi-finals.   Thus there are three purely Junior Clubs in the semi-finals.

The Irish Junior Cup Semi Finals last Saturday ended, at last, the gallant bid of Intermediate League Club, Weston, who went under to Railway Union 2 - 2-0.

Leopold was the match winner for the Park Avenue side when he scored once in each half against Weston.   Outside Left Richardson was another outstanding forward for the winners but Weston, though naturally disappointed, need not feel too downhearted at their defeat for they did splendidly in getting so far in the tournament.

Little behind the Railway Cup in general appeal will be the meeting of Intermediate 'B' Leaders Weston and that most enigmatic of sides, Newtimes 2, in the Final of the Intermediate Cup.

League form would certainly favour Weston but the fact that their rivals have reached the decider seems to make light of their failure in the league in which they have not won a match to-date.

Section 'B' sees Weston with ten matches played leading YMCA 3 by a point who, however, have only one match left to play to complete their programme.

16/3/57

---------

Intermediate Cup Final  Weston 1 (2)            Newtimes 2 (1)    AET

It would not be out of place, however, to pay a further tribute to Newtimes 2 who certainly belied their league form when in the final of the Intermediate Cup they brought mighty Weston to forty minutes extra time before going under to the odd goal in three.   Weston who seem virtually certain to capture Section 'B' league honours, in which they are unbeaten, must have received a severe shock by the sturdy fight put up by the losers, who equalised in the second-half through Williams to nullify an earlier score in the period by Birnie and it was not until the final minutes of extra-time that Birnie again scored to make the issue safe for the Weston when a second meeting of the two sides appeared inevitable.

The way is now clear, also, for the final of the Intermediate League between Weston and Air Corps on 27/4/57.   Air Corps qualified for the decider by forestalling Pembroke Wanderers 3 in a play-off for Division 3 honours.

The Intermediate League Finalists are, of course, Weston and Air Corps and this should be another tense battle.   Both had a very fine season but for sheer consistence it would be hard to beat this Weston team.   Last year they went through thirteen games in the Junior 'B' without a single defeat, this season they have won seven of their eleven games and drawn the rest and while the tally of goals is the lowest in their section, their defensive record is a proud one - only six goals conceded.

Play-Off                Air Corps (4)           Weston 1 (2)   AET

There was plenty of excitement in the Air Corps - Weston clash and by their victory Air Corps, having already won the Minor League, thus brought off the 'double' for the first time, a tribute, incidentally to Syd Peacock, who was responsible for the selection, training and discipline of both teams.

Watched by a good crowd the issue was in the balance until the second period of extra-time when Weston had the misfortune to lose a player with an eye injury and when they conceded two quick goals after this their fate was sealed.   D. Burke and   B. Burke scored for Weston and Air Corps, who lined up without their Captain,        L. Connors, injured during Basketball training, scored through Shanahan, Grant, Carey & McGuckian.
