North Kildare were at home to Weston in a mixed match on Sunday last. After ten minutes play Dolan, with a fine individual effort, put Weston in the lead. This was soon followed by a great goal scored by Kevin Kelly, playing right wing for the visitors. The reverse seemed to waken up the North Kildare defence, Rowan and Foley putting in some good defensive play. Nearing the half time whistle J. Moore reduced the arrears with a good goal. North Kildare put on great pressure near the end and J. Rowan scored the equaliser from a corner nearing the end. Outstanding for Weston were - Miss B. Lynam, Messrs M. Lynam, T. Molloy and Kevin Kelly. For North Kildare - Miss C. Geoghan, Mrs. Rowan and J.J.Moore.

Weston Hockey and Lawn Tennis Club got under way this season with a very enjoyable American Tennis Tournament, which was played at their grounds at Weston, Leixlip on Sunday last. Weather was ideal and the large number of members participating in the Match enjoyed themselves thoroughly. Judging by the enthusiam shown this year and the number of people wishing to join, the Club will have a very strong team for the matches during the season. Fixtures are being arranged now and it is the ambition of the Members to do even better than the Hockey Section which was so successful last year.

The AGM of the Weston Hockey and Lawn Tennis Club (Leixlip) was held at Springfield, Leixlip on Wednesday.

The Secretary, in his report, pointed out that the season just ended had been both a financial and social success. This was clearly shown by the number of new Members who had joined the Club during the last season and, also, the Club has applications from prospective new Members for the coming season. The Secretary went on to say that the Club was holding its Dance in the Leinster Hall in Maynooth on Friday October the 7th for the presentation of prizes and that the Members of all other Clubs that came would be made most welcome. Already quite a number of fixtures have been fixed for the new season. The Committee elected for the coming season is as follows :-

Hon. Treasurer G. Burke

The Weston Hockey and Lawn Tennis Club Second Annual Dance in Maynooth was an outstanding success. According to local comment it was the most enjoyable function ever held in the hall. The carefree easy holiday atmosphere which prevailed during the entire dance helped to portray the spirit of the Club. The music by ever popular Newbridge Band (Jim Dunney's) added much to the enjoyment of the large attendance. Supper was very efficiently done by the Ladies Committee despite the facr that it was the first occasion they catered at their own dance.

The Club is deeply indebted to the various local organisations in Maynooth for their help in making the dance such a remarkable success. Maynooth, now that Mr. S. Nolan has renovated the hall (including a new maple floor), will be a very popular rendezvous for dancers.

Dance Committee - Misses Pender, M. Cronin and L. Brooks, Messrs. M. Lynam, K. Kelly, L. Duke, S. O'Hare and G. Burke.

The Weston Club, Leixlip are to be heartily congratulated on their go-ahead spirit and initiative in the erection of a new pavilion, which is almost completed. The pavilion will a big addition to the amenities of the district and the Committee of the Club, which in a short space of time has achieved so much, deserve great credit for their good work.

On the 20th January the Club holds a grand Gala Dance in the Leinster Hall, Maynooth to raise funds and a very big attendance is expected.

Leinster Leader 3/2/1951 (Sat)

-----------------------------------------

On Friday night last the Weston Hockey & Lawn Tennis Club, Leixlip held a grand Gala Dance in the Leinster Hall, Maynooth. The musical programme was very efficiently rendered by the popular Newbridge Band Leader, Jimmy Dunny and his Orchestra. Notwithstanding the breakdown in the lighting system - 2.35 to 2.50 - the Band continued to play and kept the dancers from knowing the real reason for the black-out for which the Committee are grateful.

The function was a great success both from a dancers point of view and the Weston Club. There were numerous spot prizes and a raffle for a bottle of whiskey. The Ladies Committee provided supper at a small extra fee and coped expertly with the large crowds. A special bus to Dublin via Leixlip, Lucan and Palmerstown brought the many supporters of Weston to their respective homes. The Committee extends to all patrons their appreciation for the generous support afforded the dance.

The Weston Hockey & Lawn Tennis Club have erected a new Pavillion and the opening ceremony was performed by Rev. Fr. Bell O.S.A. who blessed the new building.

Later Fr. Bell when speaking at the Tea that followed, stressed the need for the spirit of cooperation and unity among the Members, stating that this was the beginning and not the end of a successful project.

The Chairman, Mr. M. Lynam thanked the Rev. Fr. Bell for his kind remarks and sound advice and referred paricularly to the generosity of Mrs. Colgan who afforded the facilities for building the Pavillion.

The Secretary also thanked everyone associated with the project for their great assistance and mentioned the Committee of the Club, which had been formed in 1947, had set as their goal the erection of a new Pavillion and he was very proud of the fact that their amition had been achieved. He referred to Fr. Bell's remarks regarding unity and cooperation and said that if these principles were closely followed that the Club would go on to greater things.

The highlight of the evening was the rendering, by Mr. Dick Ferguson the noted professional golfer, of the Club's new theme song which introduced quite a few of the Club personalities. Nice Work Dick! The composer, Mr. Tom O'Connor, received a tremendous ovation for his masterly effort which it is hoped will be only a prelude to many more vocal gems from Tom's repertoire.

Mr. Sean Brennan, Kilcullen spoke in appreciation of Weston's hospitality on behalf of the visitors who attended.

A very enjoyable social evening concluded the celebrations.

Since Weston opened its new pavillion on Shrove Tuesday last the hockey season has been a tremendous success with the team engaged every Sunday. On last Sunday a very enjoyable day was had by all when Weston had Postal Services as their visitors. During the match a very high standard of hockey was displayed and a very exciting game ensued. It was keenly contested right to the final whistle neither side gaining supremacy as the result left a 2 - 2 draw.

After the match the visiting team and members received a very nicely prepared tea, which is customary, and later participated in a social evening which was arranged for the visiting team.

It is understood that at the conclusion of the present hockey season, Weston are aiming at competitive hockey and we wish them the best of luck in this venture.

The tennis in now near at hand and all members are busily engaged in rounding off preparations which give promise to a very successful season.

On Friday 13th April, Weston are having another return visit to the Leinster Hall, Maynooth and, as the last dance was a big success, there is no reason to doubt but this event will be a further success.

On Sunday May 11th, Weston Hockey & Lawn Tennis Club held their open American tournament on their home gounds at Leixlip.

The Winners were Mr. Bernard Burke and Miss Catherine Farrell and the runners up, Mr. Billy Birnie and Miss A. Moore.

Played in rather blustery weather, the games were well contested and held interest to the finish.

At a party held later in the evening in the club pavillion, a presentation in the form of a beautiful tea set was made to Mr. and Mrs. M. Lynam on the occasion of their recent marriage.

In making the presentation, Mr. Gerard Shiels, Chairman, said it was a pleasure for him on behalf of the club members to present Mrs. Lynam with what he described as a token of the appreciation and esteem in which Michael Lynam was held. On behalf of each club member and on his own behalf he wished Mr. and Mrs. Lynam success and happiness in their married life.

Mr. Liam Duke, Vice Chairman, spoke in glowing terms of the services rendered to the club by Michael Lynam. He was glad, he said, to have the opportunity of wishing a founder member of the club and his young wife a very happy future.

Mr. Lynam replying said he was deeply moved with the manner in which the Weston club had honoured his wife and himself on the occasion of their marriage. He was, he said, grateful for the very kind remarks made by the Chairman and Vice Chairman and added that he was quite certain that it was through his membership of the club that he met his wife.

Mr. Shiels also presented prizes to the winners and runners up in the open American tournament. An enjoyable evening followed.

Over 70 people were present in the pavillion of Weston Lawn Tennis Club when a presentation was made to Mr. and Mrs. Louis Eiffe marking the occasion of their recent marriage.

The presentation which took the form of an inscribed 'Adams Barometer' was presented by Mr. G. Shiels, Chairman of the club. In making the presentation Mr. Shiels said it was a pleasure for him on behalf of the club members to wish Mr. & Mrs. Eiffe many happy years of married life.

Capt. A. Moore said that it was very fitting that they should be there to a pay a well deserved tribute to Louis Eiffe and his young wife. A founder member, Louis had, he said, worked unselfishingly and abidingly in the interests of Weston club. In congratulating him on his choice, Capt Moore described Louis Eiffe's popularity as a significant feature in the life of club; it was his wish that the young married couple should have a long life of happiness and prosperity.

Mr. Liam Duke, Vice Chairman, endorsing the remarks of the previous speakers, said the Weston Club was now a well accomplished fact. The building of the club, its courts and pavillion to the position in which they are now today was due in no small way to the tenacity and tireless efforts of Louis Eiffe. He also wished Louis and his wife every joy and happiness in their new state of life.

Mr. John (Sugar Ray) Earls, leader of the Weston resident orchestra was welcomed on his return to the club. With his solo items and those of Tommie Lynch and Michael Hinch their excellence as an outstanding combination was appreciated by everyone present. Mr. Harry Vallom was a capable MC. The programme concluded with the singing of "Auld Lang Syne" and " He's a Jolly Good Fellow"

Mr. Eiffe thanked the members for their presentation and the speakers for their very kind remarks. He advised those of their members who were not married to make marriage an early item on life's agenda.

An extremely enjoyable evening followed during which singing and dancing took place.

Messrs Paul Moore and Lieut P. McNally were entertaining in the Captains Song from Gilbert and Sullivans "HMS Pinafore" and from which Miss Noeleen Farrell contributed with "Butter Cup". In addition to Band members contributions, Master B. Magee, brought the house down in his version of Frankie Laines "Sixteen Tons".

In the pavillion of the Weston Lawn Tennis club, Leixlip recently, a presentation was made to Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Costello on the occasion of their recent marriage.

The presentation which took the form of a magnificent tea set was made by the Chairman of the club, Mr. G. Shiels, who said it was a pleasure for him on behalf of the club members to present him and Mrs. Costello with this small token which represented the esteem in which the young couple were held by each and every member of the club. It was his wish that they would enjoy a long and happy life together.

Mr. Liam Duke, Vice Chairman, endorsing the remarks of the previous speakers said it was most fitting that they should honour the occasion of the marriage of Joe Costello and his young wife, whose membership of the club was a shinning example in the matter of loyalty and consistency. It was also his wish, said Mr. Duke, that Mr. and Mrs. Costello would be happy in their new state of life and that their future would be brimful of prosperity.

Mr. Costello thanked the members for their generous presentation and the speakers for their kind remarks. A most enjoyable evening followed.

Weston Xmas Party

---------------------------

Capt. A. Moore, Vice President, extended a hearty welcome to all those present. It was a great source of pleasure to him, he said, to see such a hugh attendance in which new faces mingled with old. The excellent attendance of so many members and their friends represented an ever increasing popularity in Weston's social activities, particularly their Xmas party which was a regular and significant feature in the life of the club. Capt. Moore paid tribute to the unselfish contributions in the form of the hard work on the part of the committee members, particularly the efforts of Miss Joan Tracey, Hon Secretary and Desie Delemere, Hon Treasurer.

A very enjoyable Dance followed in which young and old took part.

At a party held in the pavillion of Weston Lawn Tennis Club on Sunday last a presentation was made by the Members to Mr. Paul Moore on the occasion of his leaving Ireland for Canada on April 30th.

Mr. Gerald Shiels, the Club Chairman, in making the presentation, which took the form of a handsome Gents Wrist Watch, said that Paul Moore was a young man who had distinguished himself on the Courts and as a Member of the Club. He hoped he would do as well in the country of his adoption and that some day he would return to the old Club where he would always receive a hearty reception.

Mr. Harry Vallom said that Weston Tennis Club could ill afford to lose Mr. Moore and was, he said, a former pupil of his in the Hockey Section, and he personally regretted to see him leave the Club and leave the Country. It was his most sincere wish that he would meet with every happiness.

Replying, Mr. Moore thanked Mr. Shiels and the Members of the Club for their very generous presentation. He would always have, he said, happy memories of the Weston Club. He would always regard the occasion of the presentation of such a beautiful Watch as the most eventful one in all his associations with Weston Lawn Tennis Club. He would carry with him to Canada, he said in conclusion, a lasting appreciation of the kindness, friendship and cooperation with which he met at all times during the too short period of his membership of Weston.

Mr. Moore, who has been studying Engineering, is the eldest Son of Captain and Mrs. A. Moore of the Mall, Leixlip and, it is understood, that for the trip to Canada, he will be joined by his Sister, Geraldine, who has been in London for the last couple of years.

The Weston Lawn Tennis Club Xmas party at the pavillion was a great success and everyone thoroughly enjoyed the festivities. Santa Claus made his usual informal visit and was greeted with many handshakes and conviviality. However he did'nt disburse any gifts, having unfortunately overlooked that minor detail in the rush and bustle. He stated, however, that he would disburse a double helping next year.

In the vastly improved pavillion ballroom elaborately festooned with seasonal decorations, the annual Christmas Party of the Weston Hockey & Lawn Tennis Club was held on Sunday evening the 22nd. The nearby aerodrome provided a convenient landing place for Santa Claus's private plane. Having touched down perfectly in the dark the distinguised visitor made his way to the Club House where he was greeted hilariously by a large number of children, who regarded his visit as the kernel of the evenings programme. After presenting the little ones with suitable gifts Santa joined with them in a general sing-song. At one stage during the presentations the head-gear slipped off Santa's head and before he retrieved it some of the children were heard remarking on the head of black curly hair which contrasted so much with his familiar grey beard.

A very enjoyable sketch was put on by the Weston Skiffle Group after which the Michael and Paddy combination lent flying feet to the large number of dancing fans. Their were several vocal contributions and a most enjoyable evening was spent by everyone.

One of the most enjoyable Fancy Dress Parties in recent years was held in the Club pavillion of the Weston Lawn Tennis Club on Sunday evening last. Concentrating mainly on topical events there were many entrants competing individually and in groups in which their efforts were indicative of total disregard for physical and financial involvements preparatory for the occasion.

Of the entries representing various episodes including Scott of the Antartic, Dr. Fuchs, Hillary, Ollie Cunningham Group whose presentation of an unsuccessful attempt to launch an Earth Satellite was really and truly cleverly carried out. Second prize went to Misses M. & P. Lyons whose portrayal of the "Sack Line" was extremely original. Paddy Molloy as "Scott of the Antartic" put on an exceptionally good show and qualified for third prize whilst Billy Birnie who was the recipient of the fourth prize as a "Moore Street Trader". Michael & Paddy were to the fore in making possible an enjoyable nights dancing which followed.

The occasion was one on which a presentation was made to Miss Winnie Whelan, a Member of the Club, who is leaving for England in the near future. Making the presentation on behalf of the Club, Mr. Kevin Duke, referred to the sterling services rendered to the Club in her capacity as a Member of the Committee. Miss Whelan in reply thanked the Members of the Club for their generosity and said that her past associations with Weston would always be for her, the happiest memories.

The Weston Lawn Tennis Club held its Annual Christmas Party in the Club pavillion on Sunday evening last.

A big number of children were entertained to tea, after which they took part in singing and playing games. Santa Claus made his customary appearance to the party and taking up a position beside a well decorated Christmas Tree, he distributed gifts to the Children in the usual liberal way.

Later in the evening a Dance was put on for the Adult Members of the Club and a most enjoyable night was spent by everyone present.

There was a large attendance of members and friends at the annual Christmas Party of the Weston Hockey and Lawn Tennis Club in the Club pavillion on Sunday 20th December. The programme was provided for children of married members of the Club and great excitement prevailed when it was announced that Santa Claus had landed by helicopter in one of the adjacent fields. When the eagerly awaited visitor arrived in the pavillion he was greeted thunderously, after which he gave each child a handsome present.

Mr. G. Shiels, Chairman, thanked all those who had contributed to the success of the party. He congratulated Mr. Kevin Duke and Miss Una O'Hare on their recent engagement.

Fr. D. Begg thanked the committee for their invitation to him to be present and also congratulated the many new members who were present. After an enjoyable tea, the tables and other furniture were removed and a dance followed.
