Report on 2009/2010 Ladies Season

Ladies 1sts 2009-2010

The Ladies 1sts welcomed a new coach, Brian Scully this season and had a successful developmental year.  Thanks to the support and dedication of Jon Long who was always on hand when Brian was unavailable.  The team came on tactically in leaps and bounds but unfortunately the league table did not depict these efforts and they finished mid table.  They reached the quarter final of the Leinster Cup only to be knocked out by the league leaders of Division 3.  They were also unlucky to have been knocked out of the Irish Challenge Cup in Banbridge in extra time on golden goal.
The Ladies 1sts would like to thank Philip Corcoran and all the umpires who gave up their free time to umpire their games. A big thank you also to Margaret Ryan for all her hard work and commitment week after week all season and wish her all the best in her move to Limerick for the coming year. A thank you also to Anne Kelly who was always there whenever she was needed.

Weston 2nds

Weston 2nds had a great Season and has a lot to be proud of. Neil O’Donnell bravely took on the 2nds by himself until Enda Tucker joined him in October 2009. From the beginning there was a huge commitment from both coaches and from the whole team. It was a rare occasion that people were missing from training on Tuesdays and on Thursdays. The team trained hard and improved as the season progressed. We got good results in the division 7/8 cup and beat both division 8 teams getting us to the quarter finals. Unfortunately Railway-from division 7 stopped us at this stage though.
The start of the season we had a few draws and unfortunate loses that sadly got in our way at the end of the season. After Christmas our true colours shone, we gave every team a run for their money and climbed the ladder on the league tables. It was a very exciting few weeks at the end of the season. We did our part and put it up to every team in the running for promotion. Unfortunately Monkstown were placed in our division from division 12 as they were beating every team in the lower divisions. They finished top on 50 points despite us being the only team challenging them to a draw earlier in the season. This meant that there was only really one place to fight for to get promoted. It was so close with Phoenix Park, Naas and Malahide all fighting for promotion. Weston ladies proved they could beat Phoenix Park for a third time, beat Naas twice at the end of the season but unfortunately it wasn’t enough. We finished joint second on 31 points with the Phoenix Park and they went up on the number of matches won. This was a disappointing end to a great season considering overall we won 8 of our matches, drew 7 and only lost 3. Nonetheless we are all looking forward to next season and very enthusiastic to win the league

Weston 3rds

Weston Ladies thirds team went from strength to strength this season finishing second in the Leinster League and securing promotion to Division 11 next season. The season began promisingly and it looked like the team had gelled well from the start. We conceded only one goal in the first four matches and lost one match, against Railway the eventual league winners, before Christmas. The frost and snow interrupted the preparations and momentum in the New Year however our winning ways continued with good wins against Botanic, Newbridge and Malahide. The team then had an unlucky run and found it difficult to secure a win despite good possession and play. After stinging defeats against Clontarf and Dalkey the chance of promotion was slipping away. However the team showed they were indeed a force to be reckoned with by scoring an impressive 5 goals against Dalkey at home. A two nil win against Botanic finished off the season for the Thirds on a high. The strong team spirit of Weston Thirds shone through in the end. The mix between young new players and more experienced players made all the difference in our success this year. Also having our coach, Jon Long, at practically all our matches and training sessions was invaluable.

Weston 4ths

Weston 4ths finished 5th in their division where 14 teams played. This team ended up in a good position despite the difficulty it had each Saturday to get a team on the pitch with the result of many games being cancelled and rescheduled.
